Motivation

In order to initiate my project, I complied a mind map featuring various subjects of my personal interests. This is what aided me in deciding what I would create for my personal project. Art and Fashion are two things that I value very highly and they relate heavily to personal expression which is what I wanted the theme of my project to be. Personal expression is something that I feel is integral to one's individuality and sense of self.  Through planning, developing concepts and executing my final design I feel that I was able to reflect upon and evaluate the ways in which I express myself and express my ideas in a way accessible to modern culture.

Criteria

In order to ensure that my project had a clear, measurable system with which I could reflect upon my success or failure in regards to my process and final product, I created a comprehensible criteria and goals to assess myself on. The final goal that I settled on for my project was as follows:

"To research current fashion trends relating to aesthetic design and apply what I have learned to producing and creating a design to put on my own sweatshirt in an attempt to emulate a fresh trendy style that also utilizes design techniques in a tactful way. As well as offers a message that connects to my personal values or a chosen cause."

The following criteria are the things that I hoped to achieve in my project in order to consider it successful:

-I will release a survey to a range of people and include questions regarding the quality of my design and the meaning behind it. I will ask them to rate these things from 1-10 and if I get an average of 7.5 or above I will consider it successful (this is also quantitative as it incorporated numerical ratings)

-if after creating my product I can identify a clear meaning behind it and aesthetic design trends that I have utilized (this is qualitative as it is based o my relationship with my final product and what I have learned and observed when creating the design for it)

-if I can evaluate my design against a popular aesthetic designer’s work/clothing brand and I can identify similarities between my design and theirs in composition and aesthetic elements. (this is qualitative as it is based on observing what I have been able to emulate with my design)

Planning

In order to plan for the final execution of my product I identified the the global context as well as researched the design and fashion elements I would incorporate throughout my process. The global value I identified that would go on to serve as a base for my project was "an inquiry into personal and cultural expression". The key question that corresponds with this is "What is the nature and purpose of creative expression?" In order to set an intention for my project I wrote in my process journal: "I am also trying to cultivate my ability to enforce significance and symbolism into my art and explore ways in which I can embed a value and personal belief into it as well. I want the sweatshirt that I create to not only reflect the stronger understanding I will gain of the connection between aesthetic design and fashion, but also be used as an opportunity to convey a message that I feel passionate about, and explore what I want that message to be." As well as this I created a presentation documenting my research regarding both aesthetic design elements and fashion trends.  In this presentation I detailed both the current themes and colors that seem to be trending in pop culture as well as the various elements of a design that contribute to it's artistic value. Through this presentation I was able to plan how I would go about creating my product and execute the rest of my project.

Process taking action

After researching the relevant information and defining my goals and criteria, I started carrying out the design process. I began with brainstorming a topic for my design. I wanted my topic to be something that  I felt was important to bring awareness to and that would serve to provide a message that confronted a problem in society. Some of my initial ideas were climate change, Corona virus, mental illness awareness or black lives matter. I made a list of the pros and cons of each topic and initially decided on black lives matter. After moving on to the next stages of my project, however, I ended changing this topic due to the fact that I didn't want to misrepresent the movement or use it as a trend. Because of this, I ended up switching to the topic of wildfire awareness, as the state I come from in the US (Colorado) was experiencing severe wildfires at the time. After I had settled on this topic, I developed a list of words and design concepts to consider for my final design. I ended up deciding on a flaming butterfly as the central part to represent the wildlife that is effected by wildfires. I wanted to use the Colorado hair streak butterfly as a reference for my design however I ended up deciding on a swallowtail as it was an easier and more distinct choice. I also wanted to add a written message to my design and after much contemplation I decided on the message "the butterfly effect: a spark can cause a flame" as I wanted to stick with the butterfly theme and also promote people to think twice before lighting any sort of fire in the forest. After I developed my concept, I moved on to the actual sketching phase and drew out my design with a pencil and a ruler on a piece of paper. After perfecting it, I imported my design to a digital platform and traced over it on an iPad. The aspect of designing that proved to be most difficult, however, was adding color to my design. I spent a few weeks experimenting with different combinations and styles and ended up settling on an opaque red, orange and yellow theme. After, I finally finalized my design I added text in a standard times new roman font and sent out a survey to help me decide where to position it. After I received the results of the survey, I ended up deciding on putting the text on the front of the shirt under the butterfly design. Finally, I researched a platform upon which I could apply my design to an actual sweatshirt and although the quality of the sweatshirt I produced ended up being less than I would have liked, I feel that the website I used (spreadshirt) was a good decision as it was cheaper than a lot of other sites. In general I am satisfied with the end result and although their are a number of things I would improve upon or change, I feel that my final product is a adequate representation of the work I put in.
